Free Flight Jet models.

I was getting ready to call it quits on the Jets. Than out of nowhere I see a 'Flash Fighter" capacitor powered Free Flight toy model airplane from Radio Shack. The plane of course is a Foamie. It looks a kind of like an F 22 Raptor, Anyway for under $10 I think this is a great deal.

The proportions of this one make it a very good choice. You could fudge the wing area and no one would really notice, and the fat fuselage would be ideal for a ducted fan. If I can ever find the time I'm still going to try a rubber powered ducted fan.

RDF rubber powered duct fan wow that sounds so cool. I am thinking about going with rubber power and maybe a push propeller set up. I found a picture with head on view of the fuselage formers.

I'm not calling this a "Build" yet... I would say it's more of a "See How It Goes" ... Anyway I did get a set of plans printed out at Peanut Scale size. i.e. a wingspan under 13 inches greater than 9 inches. It seems to finial measure out at 11.5 inch wing span. Also I started to pin and glue Balsa wood together.

Thrust seems to be roughly proportional to cross sectional area of the rocket motor. I glued two small diameter bottle rocket motors to a Guillow's glider, it flew nicely and left a contrail. To calculate thrust required for level flight, divide gross weight by glide ratio.

For me personally I'm on my way out of rocket powered model airplanes. Unless of course Rapier motors come back into production. Which I don't see happening. Don't get me wrong here I still like to read about rocket powered model airplanes it's just not my bag anymore. I guess the main reservation I have about rocket powered model airplanes is the smoke I was getting from my homemade sugar and tree stump remover propellant motors. I do not have access to bottle rockets till June/July.

Anyway I think EDF electric duct fan motors would be great it's just that I'm no good with electric. I do still have my old Cox. O.010 Pee Wee motor I had from when I was a kid. I could possibly make a Cox motor duct fan. I'm just not there yet.

I recall seeing a utube video of a guy who built a ducted fan plane that weighed like 11g. it fit in the palm of his hand, and flew quite well.
