Spray paint fail on Corsair

Postby Oldyzracer1 » Fri May 01, 2020 1:17 pm

I tried painting my Corsair this morning, but had to stop when I noticed the paint wrinkling up. This usually means the primer underneath needs more time to dry, I guess. I’ll sand off the wrinkles in a few days and let the whole thing sit another week. I might need a Rustoleum product to match my primer.

It looks like the problem is on plastic.if so,your primer and color spray cans need to be marked that they are ok on plastic.hope this is of help.

I ordered different paint that is definitely plastic-compatible, I’ll try it out hopefully by next weekend.

I’ve never had a problem with either Tamiya or Testors spray primers and paints..even when I used them on tissue coverings..and never a problem on the softer balsa kit vaccu-formed plastics. The solvents in the more robust sprays, like the one you mentioned, is that they can melt the softer plastics and can be incompatible with other brands. Model building is an art of many disciplines. You have to develop your structural building techniques, then you have to master your carving, covering, and cleaning techniques..then you have to work on proper sanding, sealing and painting methods..then decals and demarcations..and all of it rooted in solid research and reference materials. Each of these facets of the total effort take time to develop. Trial and error become methods and skills only with perseverance. You can repair the Corsair and save the project and take note of what works and what doesn’t.

I appreciate the attention and helpful comments! I’m still scraping away at the Corsair. I think letting the paint cure a while will help, and the longer it sits, the more prep I put into it.

When you remember these airplanes were deployed to rough hewn island airstrips with virtually no facilities and in harsh general conditions, a bit of weathering and light general abuse would be expected. Something to keep in mind as you go about your recovery effort

Yes, I think I can get it back to where it will look pretty good, except for the “light general abuse” :D

My pictures don’t seem to work any more. Is this an IPad thing?

I can see all the pictures, awesome to see the redone paint job! The problem could be if you're viewing the forum not logged in, you won't be able to see photos.
