Differences between tissue and silkspan

Postby mrappe » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:38 pm

I just finished my first build (503 Hellcat) and am starting on a 504 Spitfire and was wondering if there is a difference between silkspan and the tissue that is included in the kits. If so, what is it? I am not crazy with working with the tissue and find it hard to get the tissue on smoothly.

thanks,
Mike

Yes, silkspan will go on very smoothly if you cover wet. (See several good tutorials on this forum.) However, silkspan is heavier and if you want a model as small as a 500 series kit to fly, cover it with tissue. The structure of the 500 series kits is strong enough for wet covering and you can cover wet (actually damp) with tissue, it just takes a bit more care. One of the best covering tutorials is by scigs30.

Hope this helps!
