Dunkirk Spitfire

Postby Blacksheep214 » Thu Jan 04, 2018 6:01 pm

So after watching Dunkirk a few weeks ago, I finally got the craving to have one. The very first model I ever built happens to be a 504 Spitfire. Over its 12 year lifespan, it has been pretty rough, as she never flew right. Way too heavy. So she became a test bed for several ideas. Suffered several major crashes, and was lying in shambles eventually slated to be used as fire starter this winter in the wood stove. Then, Dunkirk came out on DVD and I absolutely loved every minute. Great movie! After seeing those beautiful MK I Spits on screen, it gave me an idea about saving my forlorn old bird. Well, the airframe and wings just got rebuilt, and I am waiting on a shipment from Guillow's so I can finish her. She hopefully, will look pretty close to those Dunkirk Spitfires! Then, its the easy life of a static display for her from now on! I will post pics once completed! Hurry up Guillows!

Ok so here is the progress so far. Bottom colors are on, now tomorrow, the base tan goes on and camo after that. Hopefully in a few days the old Spit will be finished and in her retirement days so to speak.

Ok, so here are some updated pics as of today. The base tan is on, now awaiting the final coat which will be olive drab camo. Then the detail work like exhaust manifolds, gear, etc.

I really like the way the "night and white" anti-camouflage on Spitfires and Hurricanes of the period looks. It was supposed to keep nervous British antiaircraft gunners from shooting at them. Didn't help.

Stay tuned. All I have left to do now is paint and attach the exhaust manifolds and get a new canopy. Paint is done and decals are on. Landing gear is attached as well. The old canopy sort of got paint leaked on it, and I can't get it off. Pics of the completed plane will be up tomorrow or Tuesday.

All done folks! Except for that canopy. Still waiting for Guillows to get it out to me. Then I have to put a rear view mirror on. Then she will be all done. One rescued from the scrap heap!

Finished pic with the rear view mirror attached. I know it is rather hard to see at it was a gray day today, so instead of reflecting the sun, it sort of blends in. I hope it is still somewhat visible.
