Guillows kit #307 Cherokee

Postby heywooood » Thu Sep 24, 2015 11:48 am

I haven't built a model in a while but I like the Cherokee a lot in FSX (ms flight sim)
So I decided to take a look at this kit. I'll post some images of the wip as soon as I can take the time to
Resize them

the cockpit tub and headliner are made from old business cards..the seats are balsa sheet cut to size and covered with old sail cloth remnants from some kits I had built.
It would be nice if Guillow included printed card stock for the cockpits of these 300 series (like the Stearman, PBY and so on) kits but in the meantime...

this is ms flight sim x (FSX) - the Cherokee in the sim is a 180F but the Guillow 140 was the closest large scale Cherokee I could find..

Love the interior, if you want some carpeting you can get Flocking at your craft store and a tiny metal strainer at a Dollar store and make it look decent. Some kits come with a poor decal for your instruments. I have raised heck about lack of interior stuff, thats all up to you to figure out. You have a good grasp of basic interior now, try checking out Dr.Cranky or Scale Modeller for tips and tricks. I usually box my interiors with styrene For Sale signs, then bust into my Evergreen stock. Did you get those god awful thin red wheels with that kit?

this one comes with the slightly better black plastic main wheels and a wooden front wheel...already replaced with rubber wheels of the same diameter..
I'm not sure if I have ever used wheels supplied by Guillows....Sterling kits yes but Guillow - no.
The first time I opened a kit and saw those red wheels I thought Guillow included one of those Jetstreak rubber band models in ever kit..like a 2 for 1

I appreciate the tips on detailing the interior - I usually just want something in there that looks better than the sticks and formers - unless there is an open cockpit or if I
want the doors to open. On the panel - sometimes I'll trace the gauge locations and tape the paper over a sheet of clear acetate - drill out the holes, paint it black and glue it over the panel decal. If you also port out the strip of styrene backer the decal is affixed to, and lay foil on it you can have a backlit instrument panel pretty quick and easy.
Thats if you want to wire the model with a lighting system

Is This for display? And the printed Stearman, or any other printed cockpits I dont Like. You can find plans of Out of Production kits and print the colored paper parts like the aileron surfaces on the Mosquito. You know, green with lines. I cant remember where I found the Plans though.

I agree that the printed cardstock interiors leave something to be desired, but they make great templates and
can be embelished with plastic rod and strip stock.
Yes this model is for display - not flight.
Thats a nice start on the Stearman - I like the wheels you selected

Love the in fill Heywood. Sand..sand..sand..(hand transplant) then sand even more..lol
What are you using for your filler? I use a light weight glazing putty from Dupont, its meant for body work but sands very easy. Not sure what I will use when this stuff is gone cuz its discontinued. I feel for your sanding hand, been there many times.

Elmers wood filler (interior) its very creamy, and great on toast too...

also it dries fairly quickly and sands down really well

David, this is for display. I have built for flight in the past but sadly, all of those projects
have rekitted themselves with extreme prejudice. I have decided that the money and time
spent on that consistent outcome is unjustfiable. Lol
