Wid's Guillow's kit 5011

Postby WIDDOG » Mon Apr 20, 2015 2:23 pm

I decided to go ahead a post my build here. I don't think I'll run into any objections. i.e. This used to be a Guillow's kit. There are a few things that got me interested in this build. The first is my liking of the 900 series kits. I learned that some of the 900 series kits started out as 50 series kits. I have always wanted to build a 900 series Corsair. In the past I have even asked Guillow's about the possibility of a 500 or 900 series Corsair. They where very nice about it but blah blah blah business of model airplanes and all that. So I must say that this kit seems kind of like a cross between a 500 series kit and a 900 series kit.

The "Short" kit arrived today. WOW what a kit!

I really enjoy the laser cut versions of older kits. Pre-plastic I like to call them. I purchased many from DPC thus far and will be getting more in two months when I hit the road.

I will be watching this build with great interest. Tell me more about this kit and where you got it. What is the wing span around 17"?

The where I got it ? ; Is kind of easy to answer. http://dpcmodels.homestead.com/index.html

This is a re make of a Pre 1970's Guillow's kit Gu 5011 Corsair with the old style windshield. It was a 20 inch wing span rubber powered flying model. I don't know much about the kit 5011 Corsair but I do have the 5010 Spitfire kit. I bought it on ebay. I was very surprised to see some of the modern 900 series pictured on my Spitfire box. I guess at one time some of the 900's where 50 series kits.

The side of the Spitfire Box says " Rubber powered models (except Mig 15) designed for long stable flights and flat glides Light tissue and balsa stick construction popular among discriminating model builders.

I believe all the 50- series kits were 20" wingspan except the MIG-15, which was 16". Here is a partial list of the 50- series kits:
50-? Piper Super Cub 95
50-1 N.A. T-28 Trainer
50-2 DeHavilland Chipmunk
50-3 Cessna L-19 Bird Dog
50-7 Monocoupe
50-8 Aeronca Champion
50-9 Hawker Hurricane
50-10 Spitfire
50-11 Vought Corsair
50-12 Russian MIG-15

(The photo is from eBay. I don't own the kit.) Box scale (as opposed to constant scale) was the norm when this series was introduced, hence they come out to oddball scales. No particular variant was modeled as builders were not sticklers for details or scale fidelity compared to now. If anyone can fill in the gaps in my list, please help. It will be much appreciated.

Thanks for posting David.

The picture on the box of the 50 11 Corsair shows a Bubble Canopy. The instructions on my 50 11 call for the old style Canopy. I was wondering which Canopy version yours came with.

The laser cut parts fit together very nicely. So far I give this kit extremely high marks. I do understand that this is not or never was a 900 series kit. However, I feel that it is sort of similar to the 900's. I don't want to call it a "Toyish" quality but I think that as far as Static or Scale appearance is concerned I would go with a 500 , 400 or higher series kit. On the good point it is designed specifically for rubber power.

Too windy outside for flying today. I'll have plenty of time to work on my 5011 Corsair. I can't help but notice that even though the kit seems to be very lite weight. It has a built in designed strength to it. Now I'm really not complaining about the 500 series kits but they are in fact Multi Purposed designed kits. This kit is all designed for rubber power.

I have built and really like the 900 series kit. I don't think they should change them at all. However, If they wanted to add a plane to the series? I would think that this kit 5011 (Laser Cut) would be a very good seller. Not quite as easy build as the other 900 series kits. I thought the wings would be kind of difficult. However, I read and followed the Building notes and everything turned out fine. I consider myself as a solid intermediate skill leave build/flier and so far have not had any difficulties with this Build.

Looking good. What do you need to come up with on these"short kits"to complete? I really would like the Halberstadt that aerowerkes offers.

Well to be up front i admit that i never built an Aerowerks WWl'ers before. However, I give the Aerowerks WWll'ers very high marks. My Short Kit came with a lot more than just wood and plans. Lets see easer to say the things it did not come with. BTW i never use the kit version of these items. a Propeller, covering material and rubber. The kit does come with a great CD and quality laser cut parts. http://dpcmodels.homestead.com/DPCM103H ... adtD3.html

I was so happy with the kit i ordered the Gu 5012 Mig 15. I have another build thread about FF Jets. (Guillow's F 14 )

My kit came with three plans sheets (paper). A parts locator B plans wings C plans fuselage. The plans sheet (paper) are the corrected CAD plans. The cd is awesome. The cd has the CAD plans and the original plans sheet. Also the Builders Notes are on the cd. I actually had to read the builders notes and follow them very closely on this build. The decals are not water slide decals. More like printed tissue that get glued onto the model.

I am very happy with the kit so far. The picture is all about the laser cut parts.

I totally forgot to mention that my kit did not come with any 1/16" x 1/16" x 36" inch stringers. I keep a supply of about 50 of them on hand. When I get down to about 10 I reorder. This kit used up quite of few stringers. I am making head way on the kit.

Great to have you back Mitch; I am looking forward to reading about your 400 series kits. I am now working on getting my models to look better. Now that I am planning on actually going to a FAC meet and all.
