Wid's kit 902 Bird Dog

Postby WIDDOG » Sat May 24, 2014 4:13 pm

I have been flying my old 900 Series kits with the Guillow's D 6 propeller. I'm going to try and build the kit specifically for the D 6 propeller. Test flights with the Guillow's D 6 propeller seem promising.

I will start at the tail and will try to make as lite weight as possible. Been awhile since I posted pics hope I remember how.

BTW. The way I crashed the Bird Dog was I used to much rubber motor. Immediately after launching it torque rolled to the left and crashed hard under full power into the ground.

I was thinking about using 1/16 in sheet Balsa for the fuselage sides. However, I went with 1/20 inch sheet Balsa.

I have the fuselage framed up and getting ready to cover it. Nothing special just A rubber powered model built per the plans. The nose block will need a bit of modifying to enable "Stretch Winding"

Since this is a Rebuild and not a new Build I decided not to finish the model but instead use it for flight ops testing. If I can get it to fly I will try and make a better looking Bird Dog.

Note I am using a Guillow''s propeller. I know for a fact this kit flies with a PP propeller.

Even though it's not the best trim flight video in the world I'm going to post it. On the last flight it did hit a tree branch hard and broke a wing. I am attempting repairs. I have a Skyraider with a broken fuselage I will rebuild it as well.

That last flight was nice. How many winds on the rubber motor?
What's the models flying weight?

AUW ( All Up Weight) 30 grams. 1300 winds. Guillow's 6 inch propeller.

I know the easy way is to use a Peck Polymer propeller. http://youtu.be/nHXhz9eQK9g

what I am wondering is what is the best rubber length to use. Rule of thumb says 1.5 x hook to peg length to 2 x hook to peg length.

I am starting to see the advantages and disadvantages of both lengths.

Thanks,

At the park where I fly I been having people tell me I've gotten a lot better at flying/building models. I am still trying to start a club here in Morgantown. I am very impressed with your work especially the RC conversions.

A little while ago I tried to build a "Prototype" model hoping that Guillow's might have some interest in it. I was told in a very nice and polite way they where not interested in it. Also they told me that this was a Forum for Guillow's kits. So from than on I try to keep my comments about Guillow's kits. I just wanted to say I don't have any bad feelings for Guillow's kits. I will of course try to stay on subject.

Morgantown West Virginia.

Anyway here's a pictures of a new Bird Dog I'm working on building. I reduced to the plans so now it will be a Peanut scale model. i.e. 13 inch wing span.

I made a video of a regular size Bird Dog model and a reduced Peanut sized Bird Dog model. IMHO Guillow's made the correct call on what size to make the kit.

have you considered1/64" plywood for the sides. its weight is about the same as 1/16 balsa, but almost indestructable.
