Hi David,
I was reviewing your 602 Cub thread. You asked if 55 grams was too heavy. I don't have any detailed information on this model, nor have I built it. However, 55 grams seems heavy. I estimate that 42 grams should the maximum weight for a decent flyer.
Your build looks to be good quality. The only item that stands out is the 1/64" plywood you used.
Also, you mentioned that on the first powered flight that it did a loop. More downthrust is needed. Much more.

Looping is possibly also caused by a tail heavy condition. Not with FF, but one thing that I found is that a model will seem to fly as a lighter model with more power when weight is actually added, versus being tail heavy. I used to cringe at adding more weight to an already heavy model, in order to set the CG where I really wanted it. Now I just add whatever noseweight is necessary to balance the model, knowing that it will fly much better, even with the added weight.

I am completely rebuilding the whole plane except the wings. I am using 1/32
"contest balsa. I was surprised to find that a solid tail even with hardwood reinforcements weighs less than half of a built ip and tissued tail with kit wood. I believe, although a bit fragile, it will weigh very little. I also just got the 701 fairchild kit from Guillows. I cant wait to build it. It's framing looks more lke a Duma plan. Still dont know if I want to RC it or not. I will post pics of My build later,as i dont hsve a camera at work.

Her are some pictures of my lighter build which I hope will fly. I dont know what the AUW is going to be yet, but I know its gonna be light. the thin wood is tricky as far as cracking easy, but i am patient, and determined to have a FF plane fly. This is also the first time I'm usung Elmers diluted for doping. so far it is working O.K..

That's the spirit. :D
I'll think your rebuild is going to do well, looking very nice.

By the way, I think you are going to enjoy the Fairchild 24. The construction method is fun and easy. It's a pretty airplane and even with kit wood it's a very nice backyard flyer.

My vote would be for a Peck Polymer prop. I don't really know what length prop would work the best for a 20 inch plane.

If I recall correctly, Don Ross' book suggest a prop diameter be 30% of the wingspan. I have his book and perhaps this evening I can verify the information.

Rubber Powered Model Airplanes by Don Ross. Top of page 71 Diameter should be .4 X Span. On the Condor that would be .4 X 24" = 9.16. .4 x 20= 8 inch propeller.

That's a nice model. It was one of those "oh I guess so" models when I pulled it off the shelf, which turned out to be one of my favorite builds and really my only ultralight micro. Different from the other models in the kit series, it also looks really scale with a just bit of modification to the nose.

Just curious Bill; what motor batt combo did you use. It looks to Me a geared motor ( perhaps a tiny inrunner) would fit in there nicely.

Included in My rubber motor I ordered are little brass rings. Any idea what they are , or how to use them?
