cowl fabrication

Postby granpa » Mon Feb 28, 2011 2:27 pm

I am going to try to build a cowl for a champ 85 out of a solid hunk of balsa. My best guess on how to do it would be to take the plan images and use them as a pattern. Then rough it out with the band saw and finish it off by sanding. Any tips would be helpful. I also want to make the cowl removable, and I need some tips on how to do it.
A point of interest: After looking at all the beautiful looking planes on this site I was pretty sure my effort was total junk. But after the misting job I was amazed at the visual improvement.

To make it removable you might consider using rare earth magnets.
I got some from Radio Shack, 1/8" inch diameter, 1/8 inch thick.
One near the top of the cowling, one near the bottom. Matching locations on the fuselage former. Works o.k for me.
