Comet Trainer LoRes.jpg
I've always had a thing for the beginners series, which for me first happened when they came in a Comet box. I originally skipped over the Trainer (today's Guillow Goldwing) and the Cadet, and went straight to the Flyboy (today's Guillow Cloud Buster). I was probably 8 or 10 at the time, and was quite pleased with how well it flew in the backyard - probably my first real success with rubber power. Like a good young boy at the time, when I grew tired of it, I strapped a fire cracker to the wing pylon, wound the rubber and lit the fuse. It got about twenty feet away in its wonderful arcing climb, then disintegrated with a 'BANG!' and a shower of stick & tissue bits. Since then I've managed to build all but the last in the series (Comet Cloud Buster/today's Guillow Fly Boy). Oh, and I've managed a Chipmunk, and an L19 Bird Dog from the same series - I love these too, and enjoy the fact that they've been in ~continuous production by Guillow for well over 50 years!

Progress report.

Cardboard building board.Need to cut off last two pieces of box.

Then do pin test with one sheet thick and then two sheet thick.

Have to find sanding sheets for sanding block.

Keeping at it here!

A cardboard building board, either one or two layers thick, you may find problematic/frustrating?
It wouldn't really be rigid enough to provide a consistent flat surface, and pins may not stick well?
Some years ago, I purchased from Guillow one of the butcher block balsa building boards they used to sell - its awesome - not sure why they stopped offering them?
But I've also found that a small piece of soft pine shelving from the local building supply store works great too - should only be a couple bucks for a one or two foot section.

Well. I think the cardboard will do for awhile.

Yes.Will look at scraps at Home Depot.Might take a pin with me.

Somebody told me about wood memory.

I think what they meant was if you stick the pin in and pull it out and it leaves the hole just like the pin it is not what you want.

You want the wood to close in after you pull the pin out.

We will keep at it here.

Have cardboard pieces cut off of box.

They are each about 4x8 inches. Will do pin test with one sheet and two sheet thicknesses.

Will do some glue test's with balsa scraps.

Have to find sandpaper sheets Will test nail files from Walmart like somebody suggested. Have them already.Know where they are!

Keeping at it here.

Making progress by leaps and bounds here. :)

Found sandpaper sheets.

What grit do you use to sand fuselage and wings, 80, 150 or 220?

Figured out to get this hobby vise from Harbor Freight.

https://www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-hal ... 97160.html

Was looking into vises and just noticed this one swivels the head AND the whole vise.

That makes it a slam dunk. Plus the table top clamp has a big reach. Also has a decent anvil area.

Twiddling my thumbs waiting for bench vise.

Firm believer in using vise to hold fuselage while sanding it.

Will look in box and see if there is something I could be doing in meantime.

I'm sure to find a couple things.

We're ready to remove the parts from the balsa sheets.

4 of them. Two wing halves. Stabilizer and rudder.

Will sand back a little and cut them out with Xacto knife.

That's about it.
